The two-time All-Pro defensive tackle tried to take the Washington Redskins conditioning test again Monday morning, but he pulled up after three back-and-forth sprints because he felt some irritation in his left knee. Haynesworth isnt allowed to practise until he passes the test, which consists of two timed 300-yard back-and-forth shuttle runs performed 3 1/2 minutes apart. Each back-and-forth sprint is 50 yards, so Haynesworth completed about half of the first part of the test before stopping. "Thats one of the reasons hes not out there practising with the team," coach Mike Shanahan said. "Youve got to be in certain shape to go through a practice, and that knee after three sprints back and forth couldnt go any further." Haynesworth failed the test on the first day of training camp Thursday after taking an extended bathroom break in the middle of it. He failed again Friday when he didnt post a sufficient time, then didnt attempt it Saturday or Sunday because his knee was sore. Unlike previous days, when he was mostly exiled from his teammates during practice, Haynesworth for the first time looked like a regular injured player at training camp. He walked onto the field at the start of practice in his No. 92 jersey with no pads and stayed for the entire session, watching the various drills while holding a play sheet. He wore a baseball cap but also brought his helmet, which he repeatedly tossed playfully in the air. Afterward, he stayed for what has become a daily ritual -- a solo session with defensive coaches to walk through some of the plays. Haynesworth is the only player required to take the test, having boycotted the teams off-season conditioning program. For Shanahan, the knee problem helps vindicate the coachs decision not to have him practise. "Hopefully with treatment it gets better and he gets in football shape," Shanahan said. "And hes out there ready to play with his teammates." Shanahan again said he is confident Haynesworth will eventually pass the test. The coach was asked how long the saga can drag on, and whether there might be a point in which he might put Haynesworth in pads anyway -- even if the test isnt passed. "Possibly," Shanahan said with shrug. "Youll just have to stick around." "Its like someone sprained an ankle," the coach added. "If you sprain an ankle, you cant run. Its hard to imagine Richard Zednik not winning it.  Hes the Florida Panther who recovered from a life-threatening cut to his carotid artery.  I would vote for him in a minute, if it didnt take about five minutes to wonder about Teppo Numminen, the Buffalo defenceman who returned to the NHL after heart surgery. As for stirring comebacks, those two rank right up there with Minnesota Wild defenceman Kurtis Foster, out of action for a year with a terribly broken femur.  Then theres Steve Sullivan, the Nashville forward who missed almost two full years, one for each back surgery he underwent.  Unfortunately Zednik, Numminen, Fosteer and Sullivan wont be in the playoffs because their teams didnt get there but other stirring comeback stories continue. Washington Capitals defenceman Brian Pothier is back in action after more than a year with the worst possible concussion symptoms.  The same holds true of Bostons Patrice Bergeron, whose career was in jeopardy for most of last season. Right about now, you are probably thinking as I did, there should be more than one Masterton trophy.  There could be 30. Theres Claude Lemieux of the San Jose Sharks, back in the NHL at age 43 after five years away.  That would be more remarkable if Chris Chelios wasnt still suiting up for Detroit at age 47. Its a great game; it must be for all the hardships that are regularly pushed aside for those that want to play it.  During the playoffs you are invited to celebrate their perseverance, their sportsmanship and their dedication to hockey.  When the playoffs are over and you hear who won the Masterton trophy, ask yourself how the voters decided on one name.
